As a child, I was always singing… one of my favorites was Ariel (duh! Disney is great.) My parents, desperate to get me off the karaoke machine, signed me up for voice lessons, and I’ve been studying privately ever since! In college at UW-Milwaukee, I worked my butt off to get my BFA in Vocal Performance, you can check out some of my singing here. Rather ambitious, I considered doing both Vocal Performance and Engineering, but instead my analytical and problem-solving brain found the Alexander Technique. Thus two of my truest passions began to form. They say people find the Alexander Technique for a few reasons: Pain, Performance, and as a Philosophical way to better understand themselves. Initially, my reason for studying the technique was to improve my voice performances. But I had a surprising revelation after completing my first course: my back pain, which had been recurring and acute since my high school days, had vanished! Not only had I become a more aware and more present vocalist able to make better, more efficient movement choices, I was operating without the pain and discomfort that I had experienced for nearly 7 years. I had not set out to alleviate any pain or in search of a new method of self-use, yet I had found these things through the Alexander Technique. I was hooked. I had a tool that was helping me become a better singer, performer, and actress, but also had the ability to relieve pain and allow me to have greater freedom and control of my body and my habits. My study of the Alexander Technique continued as I took group classes and early morning classes with the students who were training to become certified until I graduated where the next logical progression was that I, myself become certified. My knowledge of myself has changed immensely as a result of my studies and I have become a better voice instructor, voice user, and person. Throughout my 5 years of instructing private voice lessons, the Alexander Technique has had a great influence on the way that I teach. |
My focus is on wholeness and integration.
This is particularly important for vocalists as they are their instrument and a sense of ease in vocal production aides in overall sound, health and technique, and effectiveness of performance. I enjoy working in a wide variety of genres of music including but not limited to: opera, art song (classical), folk song, musical theatre, jazz, pop, rock, and country. I have taken several language and diction courses and often work with students on foreign language pieces as well. Languages are a HUGE passion of mine! The thing I enjoy most though, is working with my students. Every experience is different, because every lesson is personalized. Every person, every body is different and so there is no one right thing for any given problem. I am happiest when I see one of my students’ eyes light up as they are able to sing something with more ease and expression than they were able to do previously, or when they are experiencing coordinated movement of their bodies with freedom and strength.
The world is a much better, brighter place when we are functioning to our highest capacity.
I hope to use the skills and knowledge I have attained to learn more and go further into the practice of the Alexander Technique as well as voice lessons so that I can help those around me who are looking to find reprieve from pain, improve their performance at work or any other task, and who are searching to better understand themselves and the world around them.
